What Are Allergies?

Allergies are an abnormal response of the immune system.  If you suffer from allergies, your immune system reacts to a usually harmless substance in your environment.  These substances, such as pollen, mold, and animal dander, are called allergens, and can lead to annoying symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.

If you have allergies, your physician or nurse practitioner can arrange allergy testing with our on-site Clinical Allergy Specialist, Casey Oberg.  Allergy testing determines exactly what you are allergic to.  The method we use is a skin test and is preformed by gently scratching or pricking the skin with a tiny comb.  There are no needles involved, and the test is done one your arms so you can see your results.

Over-the-counter drugs, such as Claritin, Zyrtec, and Allegra, certainly have their place in the treatment of allergies, but they only temporarily mask your symptoms.  Allergy shots, also known as immunotherapy, is aimed at decreasing your sensitivity to allergens by slowly administering increasing amounts of allergens over an extended period of time.  Immunotherapy is administered subcutaneously either in the office, or you can also safely self-administer at home if it is deemed appropriate.

There are many benefits of immunotherapy, including decreasing your symptoms and risk of developing allergic asthma.  You can also expect more productivity in the workplace, fewer days missed from work due to allergies, and less money spent on over-the-counter medications.  Immunotherapy has the ability to eliminate your allergies.  A vast majority, 85% of patients, state they achieve symptom relief within the first year of starting immunotherapy.
